Al-Malik El-Adbel Salahuddin

Listen to Obituary

In 1935, Al-Malik El-Abdel Salahuddin was born to Helen Candelaria Breedy and Charles King Dawson in the Virgin Islands. He was raised by his mother and God-Mother Eglantine in Harlem as an infant and lived there until the time of his passing. Although his mother raised him as a devout Catholic, upon meeting Malcolm X in the 1950s, he accepted the religion of Islam.

He is predeceased by his beloved older sister Claire, whose life was taken prematurely in Harlem on his 13th birthday; aunts Antonita, Trina, Maria, Rita and Bieta; uncles Rufus, Joseph, James and Rocky; brother Norman, stepbrother Charles, special nephew Antonio, niece Antoinette, as well as cousins Naida, Leon and Teddy.

He is survived by his uncle Rudy, beloved sister Jeanne, sisters Marilyn, Madeline, Utah, Udelta, Dorothy and brothers Lorne and Keith.

He is also survived by his children: Kim, Robin, Kwame, Tracey (Simon), Tariq (Khari), his children's mother Barbara and his most beloved daughter in-law Khari. He also leaves many grandchildren, starting with his most beloved and helpful granddaughters Ayana, Adina and Camissa, as well as Kamilah, Khemi, Jasmine, and Chelsea. All his grandsons were beloved as well and are as follows: Malik, Ade, Sekou and Damani. Ade and Damani were always present and most helpful and will always be appreciated by their father for their commitment and sacrifice in helping sustain their grandfather throughout their lives. He leaves adopted grandchildren Nile Evans and Taijii Smith; great grandson Malik; nephews Jimmy, Daryl, Craig, Kevin, and Ahmed; nieces Angela, Li-ess, Maura, Yolanda, and Lezlie Ann; special cousins Laurice, Kim (Kimmie) and Melissa; as well as cousins Danielle, Glen, Junie, Tito, Jose, Joey, Larry, Delores, Trent, Tonya, Patrick, Denise, Dahlia, Carol, Alberto, Alan, and other cousins, nieces, nephews and relatives too numerous to mention.
