Arthur L. Mongillo, Sr., 79, of Hamden, passed away on May 12, 2025, at Saint Raphael Hospital, with his son by his side.
Born on January 3, 1946, in New Haven to the late John and Clementine Mongillo, Art was a proud son of the Elm City, where he spent his early years singing doo-wop on street corners and developing a lifelong love for its rich history. He was an avid collector of New Haven memorabilia, coins, and other unique ephemera, always preserving pieces of the past for future generations.
Art worked for many years at Leed Himmel Industries as a crane operator, often returning home in the most enviably acid-washed jeans – a style statement all his own. He was also known as the “Peanut Man” to his Davenport-Dunbar neighbors for his daily ritual of feeding the squirrels, a simple joy that brought him inner peace.
A devoted sports fan, Art cheered for (and cursed at) the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed a good card game with friends. His sharp wit and kind heart made him a beloved companion to many.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Mara (Chaves) Mongillo, with whom he shared decades of marriage before her passing nearly eight years ago. He later found love and companionship again with Mary Senberg, who passed away in 2020.
Art is survived by his devoted son, Arthur L. Mongillo, Jr. and daughter-in-law Kelly of South Windsor. He was a cherished “Pop” to his granddaughters Kathryn of Hamden, and Zoey and Penny of South Windsor. He also leaves behind his brother and best friend, Bob Mongillo (Janet) of North Haven, and his sister Linda Vincent (Mark), along with many other family and friends. He was predeceased by four sisters and one brother.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, May 18, from 3–5 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden, Connecticut. Condolences may be expressed at www.colonialfunerals.com
