Betty Jo “Joanne Monique” Henderson Sockwell

September 16, 1933 – February 1, 2026

Betty Jo “Joanne Monique” Henderson Andrews Sockwell of New Haven, Connecticut, transitioned from this life on February 1, 2026. Though her passing came quietly, she is now held in the eternal embrace of peace, remembered by all whose lives she may have touched.

Born on September 16, 1933, in Seneca, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Larry Henderson, Sr. and Fannie Mae Brown‑Bracey, both of whom preceded her in death. As a young woman, Joanne attended nursing school in Chicago. After later settling in New Haven, Connecticut, she furthered her education by taking courses at Gateway Community College, continuing her commitment to personal growth and learning. Joanne established deep roots in New Haven, especially in her longtime residence on Winchester Avenue. For over 40 years, she was lovingly known throughout the community as “The Paper Lady,” faithfully delivering newspapers with a dedication and pride that touched generations of neighbors.

She was united in marriage to the late John A. Sockwell, who preceded her in death in 2008. Joanne's had two children, Anthony “Butch” Leon Henderson and Diane Henderson Banks Wade, both of whom passed before her. She leaves two sisters to grieve her passing, Evelyn Knight and Cassandra Reynolds and was preceded in death by her siblings Larry Henderson Jr., Clarence Henderson, and Charles Clark.

Joanne will be remembered for her strength and service to her community. Her legacy lives on through her surviving siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, neighbors, and the countless people who cross paths with her during her lifetime.
