Carol Hawkins was born on October 4, 1943, to the late Marvin and Willie Bell Odums in Brooklyn, NY. On April 23, 2022, she departed this earth in Laurelton, Queens, NY, with her daughter by her side.

She attended New York Public Schools. Where she earned her High School Diploma, she worked as a librarian at New York City Public Library of The Performing Arts. A Telephone operator for the Southern Bell in New York. Lastly, she was a paraprofessional in the New York City public school.

As a hobby, Carol loved reading and journaling and was a fantastic poetry writer; and always decorated her house, doing the best she could with what she had. In addition, she loved plants and pets; her favorite dog was named Rusty. She loved family, and all the kids loved her. She sang and danced with them and went to many community events such as the pool and roller skating. She was also the caretaker for her mom before she became seriously ill herself. For many, she was the keeper of their secrets.

Carol is survived by her daughter Antoinette Odums of New Haven, CT, Stepchildren Edward Hawkins Jr. of Laurelton Queens, NY, Alice Hawkins of Brooklyn, NY, and Raymond Cameron of North Carolina; Son in law Douglas Brown of New Haven, CT; her sister Evelyn Harris of New Haven, CT, and sister-in-law Mary Odums of Brooklyn, NY. Grandchildren Keisha, Antoine (Ebony), Kermit, Antonio, Jason (Kimberley), Neftalie (Felicia), Iasiah, Nariah (Dylan), and Jeremiah. 10 Great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Carol was predeceased by her husband of 31 years Edward Hawkins, daughter Carol Lynette Brown Parents Marvin and Willie Bell Odums, Sisters Gladys Wilson & Marjorie Miley, and brother Marvin Odums Jr.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 11am at Trinity Temple Church, 285 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT. Viewing in Church from 10-11am. Interment to follow at Centerville Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
