Mrs. Carolyn [ Sista ] Virginia (Gregory) Humphrey, age 82, of Waterbury, Connecticut, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, February 2, 2025. She was married to the late Mr. William J. Humphrey for over 33 years. Mrs. Humphrey was born March 28, 1942, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to the late Mr. Herbert Gregory and Mrs. Ella Mae (James-Gregory) Bogues and was raised by her stepfather Mr. Alexander Bogues.
Educated in the Waterbury Public Schools, a Crosby High School graduate, she went on to attend Post College. After Post she went to work at Uniroyal for 10 years and then worked at Pratt & Whitney in both Southington and Middletown, CT, retiring in January 2006 after 33 years of dedicated service.
Mrs. Humphrey was baptized in Mount Lebanon AME Zion Church in Elizabeth City, NC as a child. Upon moving to Waterbury, she became a member of Mount Olive AME Zion Church in the city, and there she was very active in the church. She was a member of the Youth Choir, the Church Secretary for several years and a Sunday School teacher. She served as Vice President of the Pastor’s Aide Society, President of the Sarah Fitzgerald Missionary Society, a member of the Senior Usher Board and President of the Local Lay Council. She has also been Mt. Olive’s District and Annual Conference Delegate for several years. Along with working in the local church, Mrs. Humphrey was honored to have been elected to the office of the New England Conference Lay Council President and was Delegate to the denomination’s General Conference for 2 consecutive Quadrennials.
On the Ecumenical level she was active with Church Women United, World Federation of Methodist and United Church Women, and a delegate at the CSW (Commission on the Status of Women) convention at the United Nations for the last 3 years.
Mrs. Humphrey loved God, her church, and her family who she enjoyed being with. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to everyone she met. She spent her free time doing puzzles, shopping, reading, hanging out with the BGG (Black Golden Girls) and dressing to the MAX!!! She was a world traveler both in the church and in life.
She is survived by 4 daughters, Debra Humphrey Reid of Dover, Del., Princess D. Gregory, Kelley S. Gregory and Tracey L. Humphrey, all of Waterbury; 5 grandchildren, Jihran (Shirley) Nealy, Mark (Evelyn) Gregory, Whitney Reid, Christopher Reid and Princess ( Cessa ) Gregory; 7 great grandchildren, Nazir Nealy, Markayla Gregory, Jayden Nealy, Mila Gregory, Riley Lassiter, Isaiah Gregory, and Rylo Lassiter; 1 brother Mark Bogues of Waterbury; 1 sister Ruth (Nook) Gregory Moore of Greensville, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her dearly. Besides her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Pruden, a sister, Wendy Bogues, her great granddaughter, Layla Gregory and a brother, Milton (Jackie boy) Gregory Mullen.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Mt. Olive AME Zion Church, 86-100 Pearl Street, Waterbury, CT. Calling hour will be from 10am – 11am. Funeral service will be at 11am. Burial to follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury, CT Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Colonial Funerals, 270 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT and James R. Sanders, Funeral Director.
