Deacon James Lewis 92, of Waterbury passed away peacefully on February 22 at St. Mary’s hospital after a brief illness. He was the widower of Ellamay (Watson)Lewis. Born in Waterbury on August 31, 1928 to the late Alexander and Minnie (Rochelle) Lewis ..Deacon Lewis was devoted to his family and his church. He acquired many friendships over his lifetime and will be missed by all who knew him. Some of the things he enjoyed over the years was deep sea fishing, watching UConn girls basketball, boxing and golf. Deacon Lewis was a member of Zion Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. He also served as a deacon for over 40 years, up until his passing. He was a lifetime member of the Deacon Alliance. Deacon Lewis also attended many National Baptist Conventions over the years. Deacon Lewis worked for over 40 years at Chase Brass then retiring as a supervisor at Seymour Brass. Deacon Lewis is survived by five children, Dennis (Margo) Lewis of Yuma, Az., Sheila (James) Minnis, Cheryl Anderson, Byron and Trueshan Lewis all of Waterbury. Nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by two children, Marshall Lewis and Lorraine Sanders as well as six sisters and four brothers.
A private funeral service for family and close friends of Deacon James Lewis will be held at Zion Baptist Church 137 Pearl Street, Waterbury on Monday March 1, 2021 at 11am. Walk thru will be 10am-11am. Interment to follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery. James R. Sanders, funeral director. All COVID-19 mandates will be honored masks are required.
