Deacon Leon Mercer was born February 24,1951 to the late James Clifton and Isabella Gay Mercer in Wilson, N.C. He went home to be with our Lord on July 17,2021 at Shady Knolls Health Care Center in Seymour, Ct.
Leon relocated to Bridgeport, CT in 1970, after High School he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. There he received several Medals of Honor. The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After serving in the Navy, he received an Honorable Discharge for his honest and faithful service. Leon was a very hard and dedicated worker. After the Navy he also worked at several jobs, Eastern Bag, Emson Research, and UniFirst in Bridgeport Ct.
Deacon Mercer faithfully served at Walk In Righteous Living Ministries under the tutelage of Apostle Doris Brown. He was filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost and baptized in the Name of Jesus. Deacon Mercer showed extraordinary work in the ministry. He was an ordained Deacon in the church, Mercer was renowned as a phenomenal greeter and was known by many as that man at the door. He was known for encouraging others, at times firm and serious but also gentle and humble. Deacon Mercer was a great supporter to his leader, WIRL Ministries outreach, and he was loved by many visitors, and Leaders.
Leon was preceded in death by his (Father) James Clifton, his (Mother) Isabella, and a Brother James Curtis Mercer. He leaves to cherish his memories (wife) Sandra Davis Mercer of S.C. A Son Leon Jr. (Angie) of N.C. Granddaughter Jaynesha Davis of N.C. Two bonus children Deon Lofton of Stratford, Ct. Tiara Rogers (Ash) of Stratford, CT. Four bonus grandchildren Tahjai, Kylin. Paris, and Christian Rogers of Stratford, Ct. Spiritual Son and Daughter Archie and Peggy Robertson of S.C. Three Sisters, Bernice Lindsey (Willie) of Saratoga, N.C. Brenda Randolph Lindsey of Waterbury, CT and Rhonda Mercer of Bridgeport. Ct. Three Brothers, Al Mercer (Roxanne) of Richmond Va. Bob Wayne Mercer (Veronica) of Bridgeport Ct. and Gary Mercer (Michelle) of Owing Mills, Md. A loving Church family Apostle Doris Brown and WIRL Ministries of Waterbury, Ct and a host of Nieces, Nephews, family and friends.
A celebration of Leon’s life will be held on Friday July 30, 2021 at 10:30am at Colonial Funerals, 270 West Main Street, Waterbury. Viewing in Colonial from 9:30-10:30am. Interment will follow at State Veteran Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
