In Loving Memory of Debra Renee Willoughby
February 5, 1962 — March 23, 2026
On March 23, 2026, New Haven lost one of its most vibrant souls. Debra Renee Willoughby, a woman of deep faith, a generous heart, and a spirit that couldn’t help but dance, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love that will be felt for generations.
A New Haven Icon
Born in Greenville, North Carolina, on February 5, 1962, Debra moved to New Haven as a child and truly made the city her own. A graduate of Wilbur Cross High School and a member of Church On The Rock, she was a familiar and beloved face throughout the community. Whether she was working or caring for others as a dedicated healthcare worker, Debra moved through life with a grounded, down-to-earth grace that drew people to her.
The Heart of the Community
To know "Deb" was to know a woman who truly lived out loud. She was the undisputed life of the party, and if there was music playing, you could always find her catching the rhythm on the dance floor. But as much as she loved to dance, her greatest joy was her family and the community she built around her.
Her home was a New Haven staple—a sanctuary where the door was never locked and the stove was always warm. She didn’t just raise her own; she was a mother and mentor to many, opening her arms to "bonus children," friends, and anyone in need of a mother’s love. At "Deb’s House," you were guaranteed more than just a good meal; you found a safe haven and a listening ear. Whether you needed a place to rest or the kind of down-to-earth advice only she could give, Debra was always there to welcome you with open arms.
Those Who Carry Her Light
Debra’s beautiful spirit lives on through her children: Francoise Brewster (Jermelle), Tobie White (Demetris), Kenneth White, Monte White, Derrick Brock (Toniqua), Yashieka Harvey (Kevin), Tamika Lloyd (Mike), Shanika Campbell (Terry), Davon Willoughby, Dave Brandy, and Manijah Willoughby (Rodney).
She is also survived by her cherished "bonus children," Latara, Shonte, and Nickesha; her longtime companion, Delroy Reid; her goddaughter, Tulani Nettles; 31 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She leaves behind her siblings: Jimmy Willoughby (Vicky), Robin Gales (Allen), and her beloved twin brother, Derwin Willoughby, along with a host of nieces and nephews who adored her. Debra now rests in the arms of the Lord, reunited with her parents, Shirley and Roscoe; her son, Mike McIntosh; and her brothers, Dwight, Tobie, Howard, and Jeffrey.
"Debra’s wisdom and rhythm will live on in the hearts of all who loved her."
