Dorothy was born on March 22, 1958 to Shirley P. Bentley, the Second and Edward Martin in New Haven, CT. She attended schools in the New Haven Public School System and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School where her love for singing blossomed. Her voice, a true gift, became the soundtrack of her life, echoing through church choirs and family gatherings, leaving a lasting impression on all who heard it.
Her singing was more than just a talent; it was a bridge that connected her to those she loved.
Dorothy married Jeffrey Cloud in early 1990’s and joined the United House of Prayer for All People. Her love for music continued and she was a member of the United Inspirational Singers for over 30 years. Sister Dorothy was a member of the Cunningham United Ushers, the New England Performance Choir, a facilitator for the First Ladies love gift donations and she was on the New England “Capital” District Uniform Committee. Sister Dorothy was fond of preparing breakfast in the House of Prayer cafe for the members who would attend Sunday School. In April of 2022, she joined the Youthful Praise Choir of Stamford, CT and remained active with this choir even after she relocated to Greensboro, NC.
Dorothy’s unwavering faith served as the cornerstone of her life. She discovered comfort and strength within her worship community, where her uplifting voice inspired many and her kindness wrapped everyone in love. She cherished the moments spent with her children and family, often found in the kitchen preparing delightful meals, soaking up the sun and sand at the beach, or joyfully interacting with her church community. In her later years, Dorothy embraced each moment with grace, creating cherished memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her days were filled with simple pleasures that brought her joy-shopping excursions to Hamden Plaza, leisurely drives around town, and savoring seafood dinners. Dorothy’s life was a beautiful tapestry, woven with small delights and immense love, always accompanied by a bright smile.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025 at United House of Prayer, 100 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven, CT from 6-7:30pm. On Saturday, June 7, 2025 Horse Drawn Carriage will leave United House of Prayer at 9:30am for burial at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven, CT. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
