Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Guthu passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at the age of 73 in West Hartford, CT. Betsy was born April 30, 1951 in Waukesha, WI to Mary (Kuranz) and Charles R. Campbell. She lived in Waukesha with her two brother and three sisters until 1962 when the family relocated to Edmonds, WA. Betsy attended St. Mary’s School in Waukesha, and graduated from Edmonds High School in 1969. She went on to WSU in Pullman, WA graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, and later earned her Master of Arts in Teaching at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR. She began her teaching career at Sandy Union High School in Sandy, OR, where she met the love of her life, Steve Guthu. They married in 1977, settling in Eugene, OR with their son, David, and daughter, Sarah. Betsy and Steve relocated to Meridian, ID in 2005, where she spent many days tending to her horse, working with community groups, and playing mahjong with friends.
In 2024 they happily moved to Watertown, CT to be closer to their son’s family. Betsy’s absence will be deeply felt by the many people whose lives she touched as a teacher, dressage rider, avid reader, community member, and church-goer. Betsy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Steve; her son David and his wife Zoë and granddaughter Sienna Guthu-Wild; her daughter Sarah and husband Cassidy Zimmerman, Seattle, WA; her brothers Peter Campbell, Babbitt, MN; Charlie and his wife Robin Campbell, Spokane, WA; sisters Mary Campbell, Ericeira, Portugal; Susan and husband Scott Esary, Duvall, WA; Diane and husband Jeff Lewis, Enumclaw, WA; her Aunt Pat Schuh, Waukesha, WI; nieces and nephews Chris Campbell, Kim Iffland, Chuck, Aaron and Katie Campbell, Chrissy Flores, Sean and Neil Campbell-Brennan, Mina Pariseau, and Miriam Lewis.
Her Funeral Service will be held on January 11, 2025 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Thomaston, CT at 11AM. The service will be a simple funeral rite. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to One Light Global at www.onelightglobal.org/donate.
