Eva Armstrong Matthews’s life began over 95 years ago . Her parents were Adaline “Dot” Stewar t Armstrong and Solomon Armstrong. She was born in Georgetown, South Carolina, on March 14, 1927. She departed peacefully on October 5, 2022 , from this life into eternity.
She entered holy matrimony with the Sgt. Vibret F. Matthews which afforded her to live in Georgia, New Jersey, and other states before making New Haven, CT her home. Eva Matthews’s son Joe (Bunk) Canteen preceded her in death. Joe’s wife Christine Canteen (Chris Loves) resides in St. Stephens , South Carolina.
Eva was raised in Georgetown with her siblings: Julius Armstrong, Willie Armstrong, Salis Armstrong, Ezekiel Armstrong, Catherine (Armstrong)Mcleod, Eliza (Armstrong) Giles, Lucille (Armstrong) Linen, Hazel (Armstrong) Glasper, and David Armstrong who m all preceded her in death as they welcomed her into her celestial home.
She was educat ed in the Chop’pee section of Georgetown, S.C. Eva Matthews accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of her life. She enjoyed praise & worship music and serving family and friends. Those who knew Eva had no question that she loved the Bible.
Eva Matthews had a passion for children as demonstrated by her helping to raise many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews giving many a good trashing as she called disciplining us. She provided loving care in her home for an extended period for great-nephews Anthony Armstrong and Dennis Armstrong as sons during their foundational years.
Eva Matthews was dearly loved by her siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews who affectionately called her “ Wee’va ”. She loved the Lord and served as a minister. Her membership was at Corinth Temple Unified Freewill Baptist Church where the late Bishop Bordeaux pastored in New Haven, CT before her health declined. When she was not caring for children, she was cooking, cleaning, singing, or taking long walks.
Eva leaves to cherish her memory daughter-in-love Christine Canteen (Chris Loves) with a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, great – nephews , great – nieces , and many friends.
Eva and Momma always said,” n ever say goodbye, but
Say, See you later until the next time .”
A celebration of Eva’s life will be held on Saturday October 15, 2022 at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden at 11:15am. Viewing in Colonial from 10am-11am. Condolences may be taken expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
