Ja’Kwon Saquess Hobson-Kelly
February 19, 1998 – April 22, 2026
Ja’Kwon Saquess Hobson-Kelly departed this life peacefully on April 22, 2026, at 6:16 p.m. at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born on February 19, 1998, at 12:37 a.m. to his proud parents, Randi E. Hobson and Jason L. Kelly Sr.
Affectionately known first as “Nuttbutt,” Ja’Kwon’s nickname evolved into “Nook” or “Nook Ryder,” a dedicated reflection of his passion for bike life. The eldest of Randi’s brood, he embraced the role of big brother with a seriousness and tenderness that defined him. Ja’Kwon grew up in the New Haven area and attended the New Haven public school system. From an early age he brought light and laughter into every room; his quick wit, playful jokes, and infectious laughter were constants for family and friends.
Ja’Kwon faced life with uncommon courage. Diagnosed with sickle cell anemia as an infant, he battled the illness from three months old, accompanied by his devoted mother through hospital stays and treatments. Despite the challenges he endured, Ja’Kwon rarely complained. He met adversity with quiet strength, resilience, and a determination to comfort and uplift those around him.
Family was the center of Ja’Kwon’s world. He cherished time spent with loved ones—holiday gatherings, Sunday dinners, and the ordinary moments that knit a family together. He was proud to be a big brother and took great joy in nurturing and protecting his siblings. Cooking was one of his pleasures; he enjoyed preparing meals for those he loved, and he once won a school prize for a lasagna he made with his mother. Steak and potatoes, lasagna, and corned beef hash were among his favorites, and he took obvious delight in food that brought people together.
Ja’Kwon touched many lives with his warmth, humor, and steadfast love. He was a source of joy at family gatherings and a steady presence in the lives of those who knew him. Although the pain of illness was part of his story, it never defined his character; he remained generous, playful, and deeply connected to family and friends until the end.
He leaves to cherish his memory:
