Jason Michael Crowell, 46, of New Haven, Connecticut, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 17th, 2021. He was predeceased by his children; Jenasis, Navia, Trinity, and Juliana Crowell. He is survived by his mother, Amy Crowell, son, Elijah Crowell, daughter, Cypress Crowell, partner, Sarah Jean Hoffman, sister, Rebecca Greenberg, brother, Shawn Crowell, father, Michael Crowell, stepmother, Susan Crowell, nephews, Tyler, Jeremiah, and Joshua, niece, Chelsea and countless other loved ones.
Jason’s work was his life and his calling. Jason was a fierce community advocate and harm reductionist. He dedicated himself to supporting and building power with people most marginalized and dehumanized in our world. Jason worked tirelessly to battle the shame and stigma associated with the disease of addiction. It was this authenticity that made him so approachable and loved by the community he served. He made others feel accepted and loved without judgment. He never made a person feel less than as he truly saw the beauty in each and every human he encountered.
Jason was the Outreach Director of the Sex Workers and Allies Network (SWAN), a Substance Abuse Counselor with Cornell-Scott Hill Health Center, where his time was shared by both Grant Street Partnership and the Greater New Haven Healthcare for the Homeless, and a counselor at the Apt Foundation. Jason was also a recent graduate from Southern Connecticut State University’s Master of Social Work program with plans to start his Master of Public Health this fall.
His humble, non-judgmental approach created a safe space for people “to be” as he ultimately worked to expose the humanity in a group that is often “invisible”. Jason’s determination, genuineness, and selflessness saved countless lives and he will live on in the hearts and souls of those who needed him the most.
A celebration of Jason’s life will be held at The Trinity on Orange Street in New Haven on his birthday, September 19, 2021. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Harm Reduction Coalition at https://www.hri.global/donate/payment. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
