John Henry Barnes was born on November 27, 1941, to the late Johnnie Barnes and Lindora Gorham Barnes, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He attended George Washington Carver High School in Pinetops, North Carolina. In the early sixties, he decided to leave rural North Carolina and relocate to Bridgeport, Connecticut with his beloved first cousin and best friend Apostle Ardean G. Richardson. In 1962, John Henry married his high school sweetheart Corine Powell, from this union three children were born: Angela, Cheryl, and John Henry Barnes, Jr.

John Henry was employed at Remington Arms in Bridgeport and Lessing Footwear in Norwalk, CT. In 1982, he launched and operated a successful business, Barnes Janitorial and Window Washing Services with accounts stretching from Boston Post Road in Bridgeport all the way to Stamford.

John Henry was a member of Saint Luke Unified Freewill Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Jesse Polite. Later, he would begin attending Holy Ghost Deliverance Cathedral, under Chief Prelate Apostle A. G. Richardson, and considered this his home church. He was very proud of his children and supported and worshipped with them at King of Glory Church, Inc. and Cornerstone Christian Church.

Among many things, John Henry loved watching old westerns on television, the Law & Order series and especially Judge Judy who he referred to as his “girlfriend”. In August 2011, John Henry started attending Sunset Shores Adult Daycare, in Stratford, Connecticut, every day. He loved going there to interact with other seniors and the staff. In fact, he was there so long until he considered himself the “general” and could run things, if needed. He was very fond of Mark, who is the head chef. He loved his meatloaf.

John Henry loved his family dearly and always gave them great advice to live by, such as “Look out for number one!” and “You’ve got plenty of book knowledge and not a lick of common sense”. He wanted the best for all of his family, and he was very proud of all of them.

He is predeceased by his: parents, Deacon Johnnie and Eldress Lindora Barnes, brother, Claudius Barnes and sister, Gladys Edwards.

He leaves to cherish his memories, the love of his life Corine Barnes of Bridgeport, CT; two daughters of Stratford, CT, Angela (Anthony) Crawley, Cheryl (Nathaniel) Winstead ; one son of Carthage, NY, John Henry (Mia); one sister, Geraldine Barnes Campbell of Silver Spring, MD; seven grandchildren; Ebony Norris (Tanisha), Terence Lowery (Georgia), Phillip Norris Jr. (Christina), Courtney Miller (Rickie), Steven Norris (Stephanie), Jerome and Johnathan Barnes; fourteen great grandchildren; Nia’Imani Belcher, Brianna Redmond (Kevin), Divine and Immanuel Belcher, Joshua Banks, Jordan Norris, Romeo, Jamari and Mateo Norris, Jayla Barnes, Raiya Miller, Trinity Lowery, Josiah, and Marcellus Norris; four aunts; Daisy Dupree, Carol Armstrong, Earlene Barnes, Ethel McCain; three uncles; Zebbie D. Barnes, Ernest Barnes, McKinney Barnes; and his special nieces, Joanne Barnes- Herry and Barbara Askew; and bonus great-grandchildren: Ellis, Nyomi , Rickie Jr., Marcus, Sean, Miles, Jerome.

A celebration of life and legacy is planned for Saturday, December 3rd at Holy Ghost Deliverance Cathedral, 705-707 Arctic Street, Bridgeport, CT. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport. A wake and viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Service will start at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be expressed at colonialfunerals.com.
