Listen to Obituary

John P. Corley, Jr., born February 1, 1953, in Batesburg‑Leesville, South Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Willette Dozier and John P. Corley, Sr. At the age of 16, he moved to New Haven, Connecticut, to live with his special aunt, the late Sallie A. Corley‑Pue. He attended James Hillhouse High School, where he proudly was the captain of the football team and graduated in 1972.

John later began his career at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT, where he worked as a Toolmaker until taking an early retirement in 1994. Never one to sit still, he went on to work as a tradesman, building lifelong relationships and deep, meaningful friendships over the next 25 years.

More than anything, John adored his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Joyce O. Corley — together for 49 years and inseparable in every way. He is survived by his three children: Hugh Corley (Sarah Corley), Nickia Corley, and Dalana Corley; and a special niece, Takell Graham.

John also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Chace Corley, Shanell Patterson, Emma Corley, Brandi Lewis, his special nephew Alexander Phillips, Esme Corley, and special niece Nyla Star.

He is further survived by his devoted cousins (sisters) Wendy Hawkins (Joseph Hawkins), Gabriela “Cricket” Burrell (Stephen Burrell), Phyllis “Gail” Corley‑Graham (Gary Graham), and Patricia Corley‑Johnson (late Andre Johnson). He also leaves behind special friends Michael Ellison and Michael Jones, along with a host of extended family and friends who loved him deeply.

John’s life was defined by loyalty, hard work, humor, and a love for family that never wavered. His presence was steady, his guidance sure, and his heart enormous. He will be missed beyond measure.
