It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Josephine McCleese, who departed this life peacefully on May 18, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born on November 21, 1941, in New Haven, Connecticut, Josephine was a woman of grace, strength, and deep faith. She was the devoted widow of Edward Yopp, Jr., and the proud mother of six children: Terese Yopp (Timothy), Kevin Yopp (Elaine), Shelly Young, and three who preceded her in death — William McCleese, Edward Yopp, and Roger Yopp.
Josephine graduated from cosmetology school and went on to work as a cosmetologist, a role in which she made people feel beautiful, seen, and cared for. Her clients were often more like family, drawn to her warmth and gentle spirit.
She was the cherished grandmother of 17 adoring grandchildren, including Michael Yopp and William McCleese, whom she now joins in eternal rest. She also leaves behind a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family who were the light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her mother Louise Brown, father Joseph McCleese, and her sister Corrine Worthy. She is survived by her loving brother, Joseph McCleese, who remained a cherished presence in her life.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find peace in knowing she is now reunited with so many loved ones who went before her.
Josephine was known for her warm heart, generous spirit, and quiet wisdom. Whether through a lovingly prepared meal, a few kind words, or a knowing glance, she had a way of making you feel safe, understood, and deeply loved. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and grace.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she is no longer with us in the flesh, her spirit lives on in the lives she touched and the generations she lovingly guided.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday May 30, 2025, at 11am at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden, CT. Viewing in Colonial from 9-11am. The family invites all who knew her to join in honoring a life so beautifully lived. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
