Mackie Lee Townsend was born on September 1, 1933, in Troy, AL, to the late Mackie and Rena Bell Brown.

She was one of 10 children and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim Townsend; her sons, Runnie Townsend and James Lee Townsend and her brothers, Amos, Lamon, and Damon Brown; and her sisters, Eula P. Berry and Della Mae Smith.

Mackie was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Jim Townsend, who proudly served his country in the United States Army. Together, they built a loving family and shared many years of cherished memories. In the early 1960s, Mackie and Jim moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where they established roots and built a life centered around faith, family, hard work, and community.

A dedicated and hardworking woman, Mackie proudly worked in the Food Service Department at Yale New Haven Hospital, faithfully serving for 25 years before her retirement. Her years of service were a testament to her strong work ethic, commitment, and devotion to providing for her family.

Mackie’s love for God was the heart of her life. Her faith was evident in the way she loved, cared for, and supported those around her. She cherished her family above all else and took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Shirel Roundtree (James), Jimmie Townsend, Alvin Townsend (Janice), and John Townsend; her grandchildren: Fernando Roundtree, Arrie Bernard (Owen), Justin Roundtree, Alvin Townsend Jr., Antuan Townsend, Jazmin Townsend, Sharonda Boston, Johvonna Townsend, and Jimmie Townsend Jr.; her brothers: Otis Brown, Son Brown, and Melvin Brown; her sister, Magalene Brown; her sister-in-law, Mason Brown; her aunt, Carrie Pearl Gibson; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family whom she loved dearly.

Mackie leaves behind a beautiful legacy through her generations of family, who brought her immeasurable joy. Though she will be deeply missed, her loved ones find comfort in knowing that her love continues to live on in their hearts.
