Safely in the arms of her Heavenly Father, Margaret Johnson Holmes peacefully transitioned from this earthly realm at her home in Oakville, Connecticut on October 15, 2021, after a long illness. The daughter of the late David Johnson, Sr. and Bertha Prince Johnson, Margaret was born May 25, 1 942 , in Baltimore, Maryland.
At a tender age, Margaret was introduced to the Christian faith and was nurtured at Mount Olive AME Zion Church in Waterbury, Connecticut. It was also at Mt. Olive that she was united in Holy Matrimony as the beloved wife of Bernard Holmes on November 9, 1968. To that union, two adorable children were born.
Margaret was educated in the public schools of Waterbury, graduating from Wilby High School. She continued her education at Becker Junior College where she received an Associate degree in Business Administration and Secretarial Science. For over 30 years, Margaret had a very successful career with the Southern New England Telephone Company. She was a supervisor and served multiple regions throughout the state until her retirement. Margaret was also an active member and participant of the Black Management Association of SNET. After retirement, she loved working at the Palace Theater in Waterbury as a Box Office Associate and as a Captain Usher.
She was an active member in the Greater Waterbury community. Margaret was a member and officer in the Waterbury Chapter of the National Political Congress of Black Women. For many years, she volunteered her time and skills with Granville Academy. She also served on the Board of Directors for N.O.W. [New Opportunities for Waterbury], Incorporated.
Margaret was famous for her energetic and joyful personality; her smile brightened every room she entered. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing cards, going to Connecticut Sun women’s basketball games, vacationing, and spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her loving and devoted husband, “ Bernie, ” she leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and adoring son Chad Holmes and loving and devoted daughter Tasha Holmes Lott ; a loving and supportive son in-law Terence Lott ; Sr., her three doting grandsons: Terence “ Cito ” Lott, Jr., Tylon Lott, and Toren Lott; her beloved brothers, Leon Johnson (Mae) and Charles Johnson (Mary); a gentle Goddaughter Danielle Holmes Heath, MD; her treasured nieces and nephews and caring sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and a host of other family and friends. She was also pre-deceased by a brother David Johnson, Jr.
Services will be held at Zion Baptist Church, 137 Pearl Street, Waterbury on Monday, October 25, 2021. Friends and family may pay their respects from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. The Celebration of Life service will begin at 11:00 AM. I nternment will take place at New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury. James R.
