Our beloved Margaret Morris aka Momma G, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on December 10 th , 2023. Margaret was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina on July 5th, 1928, to the late Rufus and Dilia Stowe.
Margaret was the baby girl of 9 siblings: Ralph Stowe, Alonzo W. Stowe, Lornie Mae Stowe, Hattie Stowe, Ruthie Adams, Lithie Williams, William “Billy” Stowe, Marvin Stowe and Rufus Vernon Stowe.
Margaret was the wife of the late Willie Morris and a loving mother to her four children, Joseph Steve (deceased), Gail Elizabeth, Ray Anthony (deceased), and Tonia Yvette (Eric).
Margaret was a grandmother, she particularly thought of Jacquelyn Morris, Yolonda Bryant-Goodlow, and Monaye M. Bryant-Henderson, as her children, Dwayne Greene Sr. (Erica Greene), Joseph S. Bryant-Wise Jr., Raymond A. Morris II., and Jacquelyn S, Hinton, a Great-grandmother to Delonda M. Thomas, Desiraye R. Barker, Ellis K. Goodlow Jr., Devyn A. Goodlow, Troy L. Henderson, Jr. and Tranae Y. Henderson, a Great-Grandmother to Ti’Ray The’re (Kool-Aid) Morris and Joseph J. Bryant-Wise, and Great-Great-grandmother to Yami’ yah D. Margaret worked in hotel hospitality and as a cafeteria worker in the education system. She was a member of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church since March of 1961 where the late Reverend E.R. Davis was the Pastor. She became a member of “Choir #1” church choir and “The Davis Chorus”, singing Alto in both and served as the interim pianist when needed and a member of the gospel group called “The Soul Lifters”.
Margaret had an ear for music, although she never had a piano lesson nor learned to read music, her talent came naturally. She was self-taught and loved to sing.
Margaret instilled the belief in God in the lives of her children and grandchildren. As she was, she raised her children in the faith. Church attendance was a must, not only attending but supporting the church, and partaking in activities offered like Sunday school, fellowship with other churches through barbeques, fish fry’s, and banquets.
Margaret enjoyed watching baseball. Her favorite teams were The Dodgers, The Boston Red Sox, and The Mets. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing checkers, playing cards and uh, playing the lottery. She was a caring friend and generous person. When she won, you won.
In 1970 Margaret moved her family into a community of apartments, called Trade Union Plaza. Margaret became the neighborhood mom. She was an active parent. A fun and energetic mother. While other adults looked on, she threw herself into the neighborhood games with the children. Dubbed with the name Momma G by her late Nephew, Eric Williams, she became well known in the community and referred to by many, children, and adults alike, as Momma G.
She will truly be missed.
