Mary M. Greene

Mary M. Greene was born on August 23, 1945, to the late Cleo and Annie Rountree Monk.

Mary grew up in Pitt County, North Carolina and was educated in the Pitt County Public School system.  She graduated from H.B. Suggs High School and received her college education from Elizabeth City State University.  She retired from Yale University after 45 years of service.

Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and attended Arthur Chapel Free Baptist Church until she relocated to New Haven, Connecticut.  She later became a member of St. Luke FWB Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut and was an active member until her death. She often said God is good and referenced Jesus when something didn’t go right.  She often reminded others of God not being the author of confusion but a God of order and decency (I Corinthians 14:40).  A few days before God called her home, she told her only daughter (Crystal) to turn to II Corinthians 2:9-10 where she had the scripture circled.  This is her way of saying if you have an ought with someone, make peace.  She was quoting several scriptures from the Bible such as Mark 11:25. She believed that love was much stronger than anger, hate, confusion, etc. because she understood that God is love (I John 4:8 and I John 4:16).  Her last words to Crystal were: “I LOVE ALL OF Y’ALL.”

Those Mary leaves to celebrate her life, cherish her love, and memories are her husband, Robert C. Greene Sr. of 58 years, her three children, Crystal K. Greene, Robert C. Greene, Jr. (Hope) and Michael L. Greene, her grandchildren: Kareem M. Levey (Monica), Christopher D. Gallagher, Kaylla A. Jackson, Domonic D. Ford Greene, Mikhye T. Greene and Deyaneh L. Greene, her great grandchildren Alana Dias, Juiliana Levey, Kai Levey, her sister, Virginia “Colleen” King (Jerome), aunt, Virginia Rountree Anderson (Fred), uncle, Bennie Rountree (Christine) God Daughter Lisa D. Anderson .  She was preceded in death by her grandchildren:  Robyn B. Greene and Taylor L. Greene, parents, Cleo and Annie Rountree Monk, her sisters: Sadie Hylton, Lucy Fleming, Madeline  Barrett, Hattie Monk, and Annie Cogdell.

Mary served faithfully and sincerely as the matriarch of the family.  She loved her family and was always ready to be there for them in good and bad times.  Her warm smile and concern for others will be missed immensely.

A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 in St. Luke’s Free Will Baptist Church, 1365 Stratford Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut at 9am. Viewing in Church from 8am-9am. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at www.colonialfunerals.com.
