Mary Rose Sherrod

Mary (Lopes) Sherrod, 88 of New Haven, Connecticut passed away on February 24, 2025. Born February 25, 1936, to the late Gregory Lopes and Rose Robinson-Lopes, Mary grew up in New Haven, Connecticut. Her spiritual foundation was cultivated at St. Martin De Porres Church in New Haven, Connecticut.

Mary spent over two decades as a dietary aide at the VA Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut as well as several years at West Rock Health Care Center. She was known for her dedication, work ethic and spirited energy.

Mary had a love for life and a passion for travel. She traveled to Africa, Italy, Aruba, Greece and Portugal. She enjoyed many adventures around the world, while taking the time to embrace other cultures and the beauty of their environment. In addition to travel, Mary was an avid reader and delighted in visual and performing arts, from the original Dreamgirls on Broadway to the recent Tina Turner Musical; she remained socially engaged.

Mary believed in “loving thy neighbor”. She embraced her neighbors and often lent a hand by bringing packages to those that were less mobile, purchasing items needed from the store and helping with general tasks. Mary understood the importance of community through her final days.

Mary was strong, opinionated, resourceful, and feisty. She loved her children, grand-children, family and friends. Mary leaves to cherish her memories, four children; Ramona Sherrod, Dennis Sherrod, Sharon Sherrod (King), Frank Sherrod Jr. (Grace), six grand-children; Shabrell Sherrod, Felicia King, Jarrett Sherrod, Brandon King, KeShawn Sherrod, Kaliah Sherrod, five great-grand-children and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her sons Stephen Sherrod and Keith Sherrod, her siblings Anna Deboise, Catherine Lloyd , Helena Newton, Alberta Lester , Henry Lopes and her former husband Frank Sherrod.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Friday March 7, 2025 at 11:30am at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden, CT. Visitation will be from 10:30am-11:30am. Condolences may be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
