The Life And legacy of
Mercedes Drummonds
July 21, 1960-December 5, 2022
Mercedes Elizabeth Drummonds-Wilson, fondly known as Mercy or Mille, was born on July 21, 1960, in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to Dorris Cameron Bromfield and Fizrol Drummond.
When she was 14 years old, Mercedes and Paul Anthony Godfrey had the first of their four daughters. When Paul was shot and killed in New York, Mercedes did whatever was needed to protect and care for her children. She moved her family to Florida, Pennsylvania, and finally, in the late 1980’s to New Haven, Connecticut.
The Waverly Townhouses in New Haven was where she put down deep roots.
Mercedes created a community that was a safe and nurturing place for her children and all the neighborhood children alike. In the early 1990’s Mercedes established the Waverly Youth Program. She wanted the children to become positive leaders and role models for themselves and their peers. Her love and concern for the children was unquestioned.
Mercedes wore many hats. She was Security/Door Bouncer for Third World International Social Club in the Jamaican Community; she was employed by the Housing Authority of New Haven as an Administrative Assistant for Voices for many years; she also worked for 15 years at the Advanced Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, formerly known as the Jewish Home for the Aged.
She lived a life dedicated to the children, her family and friends and her Jamaican community. She was an amazingly strong, loving, powerful, caring, resilient friend, mentor and “mother figure” who was loved and respected by all.
She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. In them her spirit will live on.
Mercedes leaves to celebrate her legacy her husband, Kenneth Wilson, brothers, Michael Scott, Sr., Christopher Drummond; her children Petal Godfrey (Bonus Daughter), Keisha Hill (Deno), Tynicha Tanea “Boom-Boom” Drummonds, Shimara Drummonds; grandchildren, Toya Hill, Kyresha Godfrey, Errol Godfrey-Hill, Markese Clark Jr., Paul Godfrey-Hill, Precious Godfrey-Hill, Savee’on Avery, Stephone Avery Drummonds, Sheemica Hill, and Samir Morris, four grandchildren in England and great grandchildren, Dominik Donaldson, Lyric Drew, Robert Epps Jr. Harlee Hill, Payton Moye, and Cyncere Saint’ McPherson; favorite cousin, Jackie Sappleton; dearest friend, Corine Lindo; and many other friends and family.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her Mother Dorris Cameron Bromfield, her daughter, Sheemica Drummonds, and many others.
