Mr. Michael M. Shannon, Sr. 61, of Waterbury, CT passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. He was the fiancé of Ms. Paula J. Hunter.
Mr. Shannon was born in Waterbury, CT on April 3, 1960, to Mother Marion Davenport and the late Clifton Shannon, Sr.
Michael was educated in the Waterbury Public School System and was a graduate of Kennedy High School’s Class of 1978. He furthered his education by attending Post University, The University of New Haven, and lastly, Wilberforce College, from which he obtained his degree. Michael was employed by Waterbury Hospital, where he worked in Information Technology for 33 years until his retirement.
Big Mike or Big Unc, as he was affectionately known, had a passion for martial arts. He was a black-belt and fought on the United States Fighting Team in Ohio. This passion propelled him to travel to Hawaii, where he trained with Billy Blanks. Mike enjoyed music; he especially loved singing and playing the keyboard. He treasured spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren most of all. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Besides his mother and fiancée, left to cherish his memory are his children: Tyrone C. Coleman, Shantajah Shannon, and Michael M. Shannon, Jr.; his siblings: Clifton (Dianethia) Shannon Jr., Robert (Belinda) Shannon, Jacqueline Y. Harper, Reverend Selwyn (Bobbie) Shannon, and Donald K. Shannon all of Waterbury, CT; his stepsiblings: Isaac Davenport, Jr., Brenda Davenport, Jermaine Davenport, Michael Davenport, and Robbie Davenport; five aunts: Thelma Lewis, Pattie Overtson, Lucy Forbes, Laura Early, and Esther (Maurice) Mosley; four uncles: Reverend Percy Shannon, Lavioiser Shannon, Reverend Elwood Davis, and George Davis, Sr.; nine grandchildren: Marckel, J’Andre, Tyray, Christiana, Camryn, Aniya, Jakari, Aaliyah, and Zakai; his goddaughter: Roshana Blathers; his intended brothers and sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, Mr. Clifton Shannon, Sr., his stepfather, Bishop Isaac L. Davenport, Sr., and his stepsister, Gwendolyn Davis.
A Celebration of Life will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Refuge Church of Christ, 13-15 Hawkins Street, Waterbury. Calling hours are Wednesday 10 – 11 a.m. James R.
