Michael Smith

Michael Smith, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle and friend, passed away suddenly on September 9, 2026, in New Haven, Connecticut, at the age of 58.

Michael was born on March 16, 1968, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Ethel M. Smith and the late Albert Moody Jr. He was educated in the New Haven and Hamden Public School systems and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1986. He later continued his education at Husson College in Bangor, Maine.

Throughout his working years, Michael was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He was employed by E.C.G. Research Laboratories in Massachusetts, where he worked as a research technician for more than 20 years. After returning to New Haven, he continued his employment with Stop & Shop, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Amazon.

Michael was an avid sports enthusiast whose love for baseball, basketball, softball, and football remained a constant throughout his life. He enjoyed not only the excitement and competition of sports, but also the camaraderie and connection they brought. Sports were among his favorite pastimes and a passion that those closest to him knew well.

From very early in his life, Michael was surrounded by love. He was especially doted on by his mother, his great-uncle and aunt, the late Everne Lane and Ella Ruth Foskey-Lane, as well as his uncle, the late Eugene Foskey. The love poured into Michael helped shape the way he cared for others throughout his life. He was never afraid to let those dear to him know exactly how he felt about them. Michael freely offered his love, encouragement, and advice in the unique and unforgettable way that only he could. 

Michael leaves to cherish his memory his mother Ethel M. Smith and his brother, Traver Smith both of Connecticut as well as his sisters Tanya Smith of Connecticut, Nyree (Terry) Smith and Sydney (Juan) Garcia, both of Michigan, and Lisa Edwards of Tennessee. 

He also leaves behind his beloved children, Shayla Bailey and Malik Bailey, both of Massachusetts, and Breanna Vega of Rhode Island. Michael was an exceptionally proud grandfather to eight grandchildren, who had become one of his favorite topics of conversation. The love and joy they brought to his life was immeasurable, may they forever carry the light of his love in their hearts. 

Michael is also survived by his cousin-sisters, Sandra Smith and Tanya Fleming; his cousin-brothers, Ronald Smith and James Fleming; and his special aunt, Eva Smith, all of New Haven, Connecticut. 

He also shared special bonds with his stepmother, Beverly Moody, special father figure Roland Smith, and his chosen brothers, Douglas Jones, John Benford, D’Angelo Cuttino, and Keith Williams, all of Connecticut. 

Michael will also be lovingly remembered by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who impacted his life equally as much as his presence touched theirs. 

Michael lived his life as his true and authentic self. He was loyal, caring, hardworking, and unapologetically genuine—a quality that endeared him to so many. Those who knew him knew exactly where they stood with him, and those he loved never had to question the depth of his feelings for them.

 Michael’s life touched countless people, and his memory will continue to live on through his children, grandchildren, family traditions, friendships and the many unforgettable moments he shared with those who truly knew and loved him. 

Though Michael is no longer physically with us, the love he gave, the memories he created, and the laughter we shared with him will forever remain in all our hearts. 

May Michael rest peacefully and eternally in the loving arms of the Lord.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 9:30am at Mount Calvary Deliverance Church, 90-100 Goffe Street, New Haven, Connecticut.
