In Loving Memory of Roland Joyce Campbell
January 2, 1929 – April 21, 2025
Roland Joyce Campbell, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, at 4:21 a.m., surrounded by his children. He was 96 years young.
Born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, on January 2, 1929, Roland was the cherished son of the late Allan and Lucille Campbell. As a child, he attended Burnt Savannah School, where his grandfather, John Elijah Blake, served as headmaster, a proud legacy that shaped his love for learning. He later pursued his education at Dinthill Agricultural College, studying agriculture, and at Durham College, where he studied bookkeeping.
Roland was a man of many passions. An avid reader with a special fondness for Louis L’Amour westerns, he was also a music lover whose Alexa often played his favorite tunes throughout his home. He enjoyed playing cricket as a batsman and traveled to Curaçao and Cuba to play, but his greatest joy came from working the land, farming was his first love. His Jamaican farm flourished with coconut and mango trees, which he planted by hand.
He began his professional career in Jamaica as an accountant with the Shell Company, where he worked for 20 years. In 1990, he migrated to the United States with his family and continued his career at Yale New Haven Hospital until his retirement.
Roland was predeceased by his loving wife of 35 years, Myrna Campbell. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his daughters: Diane Foster (Eduardo), Gina Campbell, and Nicole Gonzalez (Gabriel); and in his granddaughters, Brianna and Gabriella Foster. He is also survived by his siblings: sisters Claire, Fay, Hopie, Gloria, and Peggy; brothers Neville and Ansel; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, unwavering work ethic, deep devotion to his family, and the peace he found in his belief in God.
A celebration of Roland’s life will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 11am. at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden, CT. Viewing at Colonial from 10am-11am. Burial will follow at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven, CT. Condolences may be shared at Colonialfunerals.com.
