Roy Smith Jr.

Roy Smith Jr., Chief Clerk of Tolland Judicial District, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022.  He was 62 years old. Mr. Smith was born in New Haven, CT on December 7, 1959. He graduated from Southern University with a Bachelor’s in History and a Master’s in Sociology and earned his Juris Doctor from Quinnipiac University School of Law. He clerked at the Bridgeport Superior Court then transferred to the Tolland County Court, where he worked for over 30 years. He was beloved by his colleagues for his humor, calm demeanor, and unparalleled wisdom. He poured those same qualities into his own family, especially his wife and son. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Roy Smith Sr. and Dora Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sonje Williams Smith; son, Roy Smith III; daughter, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton (Thomas); sisters, Sandra Staton and Darlene Smith; grandchildren, Carter Sexton, Nina Sexton and Miles Sexton; nephews, Darrell Staton and Devin Avshalom-Smith; and nieces, Chayla Alston-Smith and Jessica Staton.

Services will be held on Saturday April 23, 2022 at St. Matthews Unison Free Will Baptist Church in New Haven, CT with a visitation at 8am and a service at 8:30am. Entombment to follow at Beaverdale Memorial Park. Condolencesmay be expressed at Colonialfunerals.com.
