Sandra Moye Staton

Sandra Moye Staton of New Haven, CT was called home to the Lord on September 9, 2025, at the age of 78. She was born on June 11, 1947, in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Sandra was the daughter of the late Roy Smith Sr. and the late Mary Louise Moye. Sandra graduated from Hill House High School and completed her bachelor’s degree from University of New Hampshire in human resources with a concentration in library science. She applied her skills as a librarian both at the Yale Sterling Memorial Library and the Yale Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library for over thirty years. Sandra was a devoted and active member of Vertical Nondenominational Christian Church where she happily served as a hostess greeting visitors to the church. Sandra loved to travel having visited numerous places all around the country and Europe with family and friends including her favorite state, Hawaii. Sandra’s garden was her pride and joy. Beautiful multicolored flowers and vegetables flowed from her front and back yards delighting those who visited her home. She had a lifelong love of knowledge as she demonstrated by continuing her education in her later years at Gateway Community College coincidently at the same time her granddaughter Jessica was enrolled. Sandra had a big heart and loved to help others. Her friends have said that she had no limits in helping and giving to others. Her warmth, kindness, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Sandra was married to the late Jesse James Staton, and they produced one son, Darrell Staton. She leaves behind her son, Darrell, sister, Darlene Smith, granddaughter Jessica Staton, sister-in-law, Sonje Williams Smith (Roy Jr), one special cousin, Darryl Barnes, and godson, Lorenzo Foreman. She is survived by many nephews and nieces including Devin, Chayla, and Roy III (LJ) and a host of relatives of the Staton, Moye, and Smith families. Sandra also leaves behind many other family members and numerous friends she loved as sisters and brothers. She is preceded by her brothers Roy Smith Jr., Marvin (Tim) Moye, Mother Dora Smith, great granddaughter, Saniya Staton and grandson Darrell James Staton Jr.

Family and Friends are invited to attend her celebration of life on Tuesday September 16, 2025, at Vertical Church, 225 Melroy Rd. West Haven, CT.
