Toby Jonathan Sumrell

Affectionately known as “Tobster,” Toby Sumrell of New Haven, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, at the age of 49.Born on March 18, 1977, in New Haven, Connecticut, Toby was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was the son of Maxine Sumrell and James Sumrell Sr. Throughout his life, Toby was known for his great sense of humor, especially his corny jokes, great smile, as well as his immense kindness, generosity, and love for those around him.Toby was a proud graduate of James Hilhouse High School in New Haven and attended the University of Connecticut. He went on to become a longtime employee of Stop & Shop, where he dedicated 30 years of his career.Beyond his work, Toby had a passion for cooking, enjoyed a great game of bowling, 4 competitive games with family, and had a deep interest in spiritual enlightenment and personal growth. He was always seeking a deeper understanding of himself, others, and the world around him. Toby also enjoyed sharing his thoughts and personality with others through TikTok, where he frequently posted as “Golden Surge.” Those who knew him will remember his humor, his unique personality, his sayings, and the way he could bring laughter and warmth into the lives of those around him.Above all, Toby cherished his family. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his mother, Maxine Sumrell; his daughter, Savanna Brookshire; his older brother, James Sumrell Jr.; his nieces and nephews, Jamilah Rice, James Sumrell III, Andrea Jackson, Kiara Sumrell, Jamil Weatherspoon, and Jaylen Weatherspoon; his cousins and godbrothers, Devonta Sumrell and Danny Sumrell; a beloved cousin/brother, James Bowden (JD); and a host of great-nieces/nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and dear friends.He was preceded in death by his father, James Sumrell Sr.; his paternal grandparents, Mary Sumrell and John Henry Sumrell; his maternal grandparents, Vera Sadler and Mack Sadler; and his godmother and aunt, Juanita Sumrell.Though his presence will be deeply missed, Toby's memory will live on through the stories we tell, the memories we share, the laughter he gave us, and the many lives he touched. His spirit will remain with those who loved him, and he will never be forgotten.
